Lindgren, Per Leonard, Gavle, född 1848/92014-02-27 09:39

2010-04-14 00:40

Hi, I"m looking for any information about Per Leonard Lindgren born in Gavle Sweden in 1848/9. He emigrated to U.S. after marrying Erika Matilda Bergstrom although I cannot find any immigration records for them. The 1920 United States Census for  Muskegon Michigan States that he as Peter Lindgren arrived in the United States in 1883 and Matilda in 1885.
Any Help would be appreciated. His younger brother Johan (my great grandfather) migrated to Australia 1880"s. Kind Regards Cliff Lindgren

Hi, many thanks for that very useful information

 - Pehr LINDGREN was Per Leonard Lindgren's father and I am unable to find anything about him before he married Per Leonard's mother Brita Strommer in 1845. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards Cliff.

Hi, noticed that Per L. lindgren was born 31 Sep. Impossible, since there are only 30 days in Sep.

I can´t find his birth in Gävle.

Pehr Lindgren, I can't read his title, and Widow Br. Cathar. Strömmer (32) had a son Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand on 20 Nov. 1856 in Gävle.

That child is illegitimate. This indicates they we not married.

Eva M

I found him in Gävle: born 31 July 1848. I read the father's title as Hautboisth. It is a title for a musician playing the oboe in the army. So Lindgren is probably the name given to him in the army. Per L. and Br. Catharina Strömmer seem to be married here. There is something in the margin which I can't read, the name of a place?

hi,  thank you so much for the information. a lovely surprise that you found where Pehr Lindgren came from and that he was a musician in the army.

Is it possible to know what surname he had when he was born?

and if he enlisted in the army at Rengsjö before he was married?

Pehr and Brita's other son Johan Gottfrid was my great grandfather and came to Australia in the early1880's.

I don't know much about Johan's sister Petronella Aurora Lindgren except that she had a son August Richard  30 Mar 1878  Birthplace: Gävle, Gävleborg,

I have Widow Brita Catharina Strömmer having a son Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand Pehrsson on 20 Nov 1856 and think it was probably the child of Gustaf Ferdinand Bredberg. Brita married Gustaf Bredberg on 28 Jun 1857 at Gavle. They had another son Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand Bredberg on 28 Sep 1858, so probably the first son did not survive. They also had a daughter Hilda Wilhelmina Bredberg in 1861.

Kind Regards

It is said about Johan Gottfrid "at sea". I think the date of communion refers to sister Hilda Wilhelmina. When looking thoroughly the date is on her line. He has not been to communion between 1871-1880.

Hi, Thank you so much

I have this information about my great grandfather Johan Gottfrid

- 19 Feb 1870 at 16 years old he was admitted to work as a Jungman in Gävle and came to Australia while working on the Ship 'Fredric'. He returned with the 'Frederic' to Copenhagen where he was paid and then he returned to Gävle.

- 10 May 1871 he worked on the Ship 'Eclipse' that went to Dieppe in France.

- 29 July 1872 he again on the Ship 'Eclipse' that went to Cardiff in Wales U.K.

- 10 September 1872 he ran away from 'Eclipse' in Cardiff.

On his naturalisation paper in 1910 he put that he came to Australia in 1870 on the ship 'Black Adder' but maybe he was confused or worried for whatever reason he ran away. I don't know if he ever went back to Sweden or kept contact with his family.

He married on 14th July 1884 and lived in Beaconsfield Tasmania Australia.

In 1891 he became a steam engine driver and stated that he was born in Gefle Sweden on 11 October 1853, but gave no other family information.

He died at home in Beaconsfield  24 December 1932.

kind regards Cliff

Hi, I see that you have the information from Gävle Seamen's house. You only find information there from employments on Swedish ships. After he "ran away" in Cardif,  he was probably on a British ship.

He can't have come to Australia in 1870 because then he was on the ship Fredric which was owned by a mercant Pousette who was well-known in Gävle.

Have you checked the Black Adder? I have come across lists of run-away seamen in Australia.

Eva M

  SVAR 2014-02-13 14:06

The Black Adder was a clipper.

Fom her timetable:

1872 November 21 - February 23

Sailed from London to Sydney in 83 days.

1873 May 3

Partly dismasted in a typhoon on voyage from Newcastle, NSW, to Shanghai with a cargo of coal

1875 December 27 - March 20

Sailed from Deal to Sydney in 78 days.

Then she wasn't in Australian waters until 1886. It is in Sydney I have seen the lists.

Census was made in 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910. There is no Johan Gottfrid in any of them. I don't understand what you mean by census 1893-1917.

It is true that senior´s sister moved to Gävle in 1841. You should look for somebody called Margareta Jonsdotter. Her name was not Lindgren.

Hi, Johan Gottfrid Lindgren born in Gefle Sweden on 11 October 1853, had used the name  John George Wilson when he sailed on British ships after 1872 but I don't know why.

The last time I know of that he used his birth name (Johan Gottfrid Lindgren) as on the 29 July 1872 on the Ship 'Eclipse' that went to Cardiff in Wales U.K.

I cannot find any more information about that journey on the 'Eclipse'  that would give any reason why he ran away and used another name.

Kind regards Cliff

  SVAR 2014-02-27 09:39

To "run away" may just mean that you missed the departure of the ship. I have a friend who "ran away" in Hull. The reason he had been too drunk to show up. Probably in those days the conditions aboard were poor so some seamen decided to jump ship.

I guess he changed his name since he may have become blacklisted under his real name. An ordinary English name was probably better than a Swedish name.
