John Phillip Krantz is my great grandfather. He came to the US as a boy, alone, in 1879 we think. He would have been 10. He says his parents are Sven Lawson Krantz and Nathalie Nilsson on his government papers. He also told his 2 daughters that he would never be traced; so far, he is correct. Can anyone help? (His wife was also Swedish, Josephine Carlson, but we have records on this family.) Thank you. Doug Holtz, Milwaukee, WI USA http://dougholtz.servehttp.com:2317/geneweb?b=dougholtz

As living in Laholm I have tried to get a track but without result. He has swept his footprints well. - I first looked for any Krantz or Krans in Halland county and found a widow, Nelina Nilsdoter Krans, b. 1817 at Braered, living 1890 at Veinge 8. She is there said to have a son, Johan Peter, b. 1866-08-22 in Laholm town. Checking in Laholm I found a boy boy with that name but as a son of unmarried Johanna Månsdotter. Could this be a grand daughter? However this Johan Peter moved to Borås (a city in Älvsborg county)in 1880. If your date of 1879 for immigration is correct it could not be this boy. Also, I have not found any suitable boy of 10 in the passenger records of 1879 either. Unless you cannot furnish other and better data on him I guess the problem is impossible to solve and we have to state that his track sweeping was successful.

I have additional information. Another relative says he was born 22 Aug 1866, not 1869. We are unsure of his departure date; we are sure he is in the US in 1872. Ove Billing has found a person with too many similarities to ignore. I don't know who Johanna Mansdotter is; the only names I have are John P Krantz, Sven Larson Krantz, and Nathalie (Nelina?) Nilsdotter. Thanks

I have additional information from Olof Cronberg. " Nelina Nilsdotter was a widow of the former artillerist and tailor Sven Larsson Krans (thus the Krans name is probably a soldier's name), b 1822-09-24, d 1879. They married 1848-04-24 in Veinge parish. They seem to have only one child Anna Beata, b 1851-03-12 in Veinge, d 1872-08-31 in Veinge. Since the birth date of Johan Peter Krantz mentioned as a son of Nelina in the houshold examination roll (AI:17A:210) is 1866-08-22 in Laholm is fitting with the birth record of Johan Peter, son of Johanna Månsdotter, it is likely that it should be the same man. Obviously, he can't be a true son of Nelina, since she is to old. He can't be a grandson of her either, since she seems to have only one child. I would assume that Johan Peter was some kind of foster son. Johanna Månsdotter is found in the household examination roll of Laholm AI:6:47. She is b 1839-11-24 in Svalöv parish, Malmöhus län (and daugther of a Måns Svensson and his wife Marna Andersdotter (b 1805) in Norra Svalöv village). She was a maid at Hans Svensson, b 1821-09-03 and Nilla Andersdotter b 1830-05-29. She is noted as moving out of Veinge parish 1865-10-18, moving in to Laholm 1865-11-07, moving out to Denmark 1865-11-20, moving in from Denmark 1866-05-12, and then moving out to Helsingborg. According to the Emibas CD, she moved together with her son Johan Peter from Helsingborg to Jutland, Denmark in 1868-03-09. According to Helsingborgs stadsförsamling AI:52:64 she returned with her son to Helsingborg 1868-12-10 and a daughter Frejda Carolina was born 1869-02-20 in Helsingborg. At AI:57:407 they moved to M 1869. M is apprently AI:55:63 where people without certain address is placed. The daughter died 1877-01-31. According to the death note, the family was then staying in Allerum parish. In 1896, the mother and son was moved to the list of unknown recidence. Johannas moving from Veinge to Laholm and then to Denmark is nine month before the birth of her child, so I guess that movings could be of reason to hide a tragedy. I guess that she was rather poor, and had to work as maid in different families. In the 1870ties, it is hard for the authorities to keep track of her whereabouts, but the note of her daughter's death is found. When Johan Peter appears at Nelina, he should have moved in 1879, but it doesn't tell from where. So there is a gap, that is difficult to bridge. When Johan Peter moved to Borås, it should be possible to track him further, but you need to have the moving-in-records and they are not filmed. /Olof C" Johan P left Laholm in 1870 for Boras with his mother and new baby sister. Mother Johanna Mansdotter moved around a lot in 1865 to 1870. It is now unsure as to who the father of John P is. Does anyone have access to the records of moving in to Boras and moving out, possibly to the USA in 1872 of Johan P?

How do I find his birth certificate based on information above? Thanks

I am astonished to find that you still stick to the the Johan P, b. 1866 as it is shown that he went to Borås in 1890. How can he have been in US in 1872? I have put a lot of work into this and my friend Olof Cronberg very much more and we, at least not I, have got a thank you. However, you will find the note about the birth of Johan P in http://www.genline.se on page 100013.8.4400, see bottom line of the picture attached.

Ove; Thank you for this picture. I apologize for you not receiving a personal thank you. I thought I got one to you personally or thru this medium. I did send one to Olof and Jolveig Solbeck personally. You have all been a big help. This has to be my g grandfather because of his birth date (was 1866, not 1869 as I originally posted), the names of the "parents" he has put on paper, and his town name where he was raised (Laholm). He is in the US in 1882 and is missing from 1880 until then, as is his mother Johanna Mansdotter. Olof C has evidence they went to Boras but that's where the trail ends in 1880 (not 1890). Again, thank you for your research. I have data on my web site about more Swedish ancestors from Saby and Jonkoping if you are interested. http://dougholtz.servehttp.com and scroll down to "Search my ancestors". If you need help here I can assist.

Ove; I found out where my "Thank You" to you went. I replied to the scangen email that was sent to me :( It never made it to you of course. It is sitting in my "Sent Items" folder. Sorry I didn't know this was the wrong thing to do. Hope you enjoy the Olympics.
